How should I set up the null and the alternative hypotheses?

Although we keep following the sequence of saying the null and the alternative hypotheses, we first formulate the alternative hypothesis under the philosophy of hypothesis testing. The alternative hypothesis is what we want to determine if it is true, and thus it should be derived from the research question we want to answer.
